It’s been a mixed bag when it comes to the monthly jobs numbers and the industries that Finish Line Staffing serves. Overall, a positive Jobs Report came out for April with 223, 000 jobs added; a great boost to the overall economy. And as we saw, the stock market reacted favorably on May 8.
Industries that did well include construction which fared very well with over 45,000 jobs added during April. Professional and business services which includes engineering, certain tech industries and temp workers added 62,000 during the same time period.
We have seen a decline in manufacturing employment for a number of reasons. Only 18,000 jobs added in the first quarter of this year. Everything from a strong dollar, slipping demand as well as a shortage of skilled labor especially in advanced manufacturing could be the causes for this.
Overall, we are seeing a forward motion in the Jobs market despite a less than favorable Jobs Report for March; which may have been a result of weather. National unemployment is down one full point in the past 13 months and the Massachusetts unemployment rate now stands at 4.8 percent.
