His expertise is in MEMS fabrication technology, biological microsystems and the development of microdevices for therapeutic clinical applications.

Program Description
Temporary mechanical circulatory and pulmonary support devices are essential technologies for patients in urgent need of heart and / or lung support emergently before, during, and post-surgery. Each year, more than 725,000 hospital discharges related to heart procedures are performed in the U.S. In addition, there are more than 450,000 cases involving lung transplants and hospitalizations for chronic obstructive pulmonary disorders and acute respiratory failure. The successful outcome of critical interventions are the result the skill and care of the surgeon assisted by the rapid pace of innovation related to advanced pump technologies.
This session will cover current and emerging technologies related to advanced life saving pump technologies employed in critical care settings sharing lessons learned from the care delivery, engineering, and the go to market perspective.
Key topics to be addressed include real world stories covering multiple topics which also have carryover to other critical care technologies.
• How to address unmet needs and the clinical criteria employed to select critical care technologies.
• Engineering approaches to advance critical care innovation considering cost parameters and design constraints such as temperature control, pressure regulation, and managing flow rates.
• How to approach business expansion and overcoming sales challenges from the first sales call to developing and nurturing relationships.

“Go to Market Realities-Formulating then Delivering on the Playbook”
Bill specializes in strategy development, market positioning, and the Go to Market execution for the commercialization of emerging technologies. He brings 25 years of operations and business development experience supporting Fortune 1,000 companies and emerging companies through critical stages of turn-around, rapid growth, and transformation. Bill has directed client engagements across multiple industries. His health care work has addressed multiple modalities that have included diabetes, orthopedics, imaging, and critical care to HCIT and IoT Platforms. Bill formerly was a part of Arthur D. Little’s Technology and Innovation Management team, a Senior Manager with Ernst & Young and program management roles within Honeywell Aerospace.

“The Team Approach to Integrating Innovative Technologies into Clinical Practice”
Dr. Todd Astor is the Medical Director of the Lung and Heart-Lung Transplant Program at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Prior to coming to MGH, Dr. Astor started a novel lung and heart-lung transplant center with a focus on the transplantation of patients with advanced congenital cardiopulmonary disease at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital/ Ohio State University Medical Center. Todd did his undergraduate work at Colby College and received his MD degree from The George Washington University School of Medicine. He recently received an M.B.A. degree from M.I.T. Todd is passionate about combining innovative diagnostic and therapeutic technologies with novel systems of healthcare delivery, and forging more collaborative pathways between academia and industry.

“The Engineering Behind Breakthrough Critical Care Technologies”
Dr. Borenstein is a Technical Director and the Principal Investigator for several of Draper’s programs in artificial organs, tissue engineering and implantable devices. His expertise is in MEMS fabrication technology, biological microsystems and the development of microdevices for therapeutic clinical applications. He is also Program Leader for Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering with the Center for the Integration of Medicine and Innovative Technology (CIMIT), a consortium of the Harvard Medical School teaching hospitals, Draper Laboratory and MIT.
Dr. Borenstein holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the University at Albany and holds 55 issued patents, as well as 80 published patent applications and over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles and conference proceedings.
John Pantano, Regional Director, Healthcare Alliances, Philips Health Care
“Selling into Critical Care Settings”
John leads a team of Account Managers and Sales Specialists chartered to drive the growth of Philips’ Healthcare portfolio to IDNs. His role involves formulating sales strategies, engaging with clinicians to uncover needs, facilitate and support the procurement process, serve as a product knowledge and training resource to clinical customers, and deliver training support to advance the professional development of team members. Previously he held positions at General Electric as Enterprise General Manager where he was responsible for managing business development for many of the largest IDNs in New England. John holds an MBA in Marketing and Finance from the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business, and a bachelor’s degree in Finance from the University of Connecticut, where he graduated from the Honors Program Magna Cum Laude.
